May is National Melonoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. let's be sun safe especially as the warm weather approaches and we spend more time outdoors with more of our skin exposed to the sun. We all need sun protection especially children, since unprotected exposure to the sun during youth puts them at an increased lifetime risk for skin cancer.

    Things you can do include:

  1. Limit your time in the midday sun "The Shadow Rule" is a good indication of UV intensity; watch your shadow. No shadow, seek shade!
  2. Wear a hat.
  3. Wear sunglasses that block 99-100 percent UV radiation.
  4. Avoid sunlamps and tanning parlors.
  5. Don't forget the sunscreen! Children should use sunscreen with a SPF 30 or higher. Apply it 15 to 20 minutes before going out into the sun to allow the cream to bind to the skin, use an ounce of sunscreen per application and reapply every 90 minutes.
Two reminders:
  1. Phyiscal and immunization forms have gone out to 6th grade students...If you haven't seen them look in the backpacks!
  2. Also...Summer work physicals will be held at Westfield Vocational Technical High School on June 5, 2008 starting at 9:00 AM. Contact Mrs. Pelli if you wish to participate.
                                  Happy Spring,
                            Mrs. Pelli
